Child Sacrifice

Many children in Uganda have been killed due to human sacrifice. There are many causes for this, with the most prominent being religion. SWODIA fights human sacrifice by working with the local population.

Children are kidnapped while going to school or to fetch water, an 8 to 9 kilometer trip on average. The majority of the kidnappings take place in the evening or at night when it is dark outside. Kyampisi in the Mukono district is considered an area with a high number of human sacrifice. This area has the highest number of reported cases of child disappearance or kidnappings.

Child sacrifice is an extreme religious ritual of killing for blood in order to thank or request “supernatural beings”. The kidnappers believe that by committing human sacrifice, their problems with poverty or health will be resolved. The body parts are collected, and often facial features or genitals are separated from the bodies and used in ceremonies or for drugs made with human organs. A police investigation found that child killing rituals are more common than Ugandan authorities once thought.Adults are also killed for human sacrifice. The practice of human sacrifice is on the rise in Uganda, especially in the Mukono District.

SWODIA organizes community workshops with around 45 people in attendance per session. At these workshops, community members listen to human sacrifice issues, discuss causes and circumstances the community has heard of or witnessed. This workshop has a variety of activities including sports, music, dialogues; SWODIA invites traditional healers, religious groups among others. To date, over 500 people have attended the child sacrifice awareness events.

SWODIA is seeking funds to continue advocating for an end to child and human sacrifice. Counseling, workshops, and activities to educate the population and give them a better view of human rights will continue. Through these, SWODIA will minimize, with campaigns and exposure, the acts of kidnappings for human sacrifice.  SWODIA will also implement programs to show the damage of these actions to the community and to the local police and politicians.
